Seems like the world of pop music has been hitting some new levels of boring this year. The biggest hit of the year looks to be "Choosin' Texas" by Ella Langley, as it continues to break records on the charts. That song is boring, and I've talked enough about it in a previous post. Really, what I want to talk about is the current #2 song on the charts. That song happens to be "BOSTON" by up-and-comer Stella Lefty. If you don't know, the song already had its share of criticism from music lovers and even music critics. I want to talk about that, but also the fact that she's a Nepo Baby.
Stella Lefty's hit song Boston was called out for sounding a lot like Noah Kahan's big hit "Stick Season". So much so that Vanity Fair asked her about it in an interview. You see, Noah Kahan's team was aware of the song sounding like his big hit. They actually contacted her because of it, which led to Stella Lefty putting a songwriting credit for Noah on her song "Boston". There's no evidence of them threatening legal action if she didn't, but it's not that crazy to think that's why she gave him the writing credit. In that same interview, when asked why she put Noah as a writing credit, she just responded by saying she wasn't thinking about Noah at all when writing the song. Many music fans have found videos of Stella performing covers of Stick Season on her TikTok. Not just one cover. Several covers of the song. I don't know anything about Stella personally. But this just feels like someone who was clearly inspired by another hit song, made her own version of it, and now has a huge hit because of it. Just what I think, not saying it's the truth.
This leads to another issue with Stella, and that's her family. This story might not be so bad if Stella were a small artist just trying to find her way into the music industry. Sure, it's still not right to copy songs even if you're a smaller artist, but at least you'd understand there might be some desperation to try to make it big when you have nothing. Stella is not that. In fact, Stella comes from a billionaire family. She's the daughter of Eric Lefkofsky, who is the co-founder of Groupon and the current CEO of Tempus AI. That's right, Stella comes from an insanely rich family. There's been a lot of talk about Nepo Babies in the world in the last decade or so. The idea is that people are being given better chances in life because of their parents or other famous family members. This leads to these kids getting jobs in the industry without having to necessarily put in the grind and work that others do their entire lives, and still don't get in. In Stella Lefty's case, she now has a big music career, and there's no doubt that being a billionaire had a lot to do with how she found success. But you know what, I can't really blame them. If you have a chance to get your dream job because of your parents' money, you take it. Most people would. Now, what you do with that power is what leads me to anger, and Stella possibly stealing from another artist to find fame is where the problem lies. Because it's not enough to have all the money and connections to kick-start a music career easily; you also can't even come up with your own ideas for the songs. The problem with Nepo Babies is that they are pushed to the top, but they don't even have the talent to really belong there.
Anyway, I don't want to hate on every Nepo Baby that exists in entertainment. There are plenty of very talented ones who, despite probably getting an easier road to success, still have something to offer. Of course, if this means other hard-working actors and musicians are passed over for the ones with famous parents, then this is a problem. The world needs more unique names, hard workers, and people who struggled to find success and finally get it. They usually have better stories to tell anyway. All this to say. Stella Lefty is exactly what we don't need in music. The pop music scene is getting bad enough as it is; please let these lazy artists go away. Even if Stella is telling the truth about not copying Noah's song, the song "Boston" is still terrible regardless. Please. Listen to better music. I beg you.
